Leesburg, Florida — Cultures come together on Tuesday as the Leesburg Lightning welcome the Korea University Baseball Federation to Pat Thomas Stadium-Buddy Lowe Field at 7 p.m. to play an exhibition game.
This is the second straight summer that the Korea University Baseball Federation has come to face Florida Collegiate Summer League opponents — playing three games in three days last summer.
The KUFB consists of top amateur players from South Korea — the same setup as the FCSL but on a larger scale.
This experience is new to Lightning head coach Rich Billings so he will make sure that his players and coaching staff enjoy every bit of it.
“Learning a bit about their culture and being able to see the way they play baseball will be interesting to watch,” Billings said. “You don’t get to play teams outside of the United States very often.”
On top of that, the Lightning organization will be honoring the veterans of the Korean War — where a pinning ceremony will take place.
“History is really interesting to me,” Billings said. “Getting to meet and talk with the veterans about their experience in Korea will be fascinating. That’s certainly another thing to be excited about.”
