Leesburg, Florida — Cultures come together tonight as the Leesburg Lightning welcome the Korean National Team to Pat Thomas Stadium for an exhibition game. First pitch is slated for 7:00pm.
The Korean National Team has played three games so far — one against the Sanford River Rats and a doubleheader against the FCSL Prospect Team — and Leesburg is their last stop before they travel back to South Korea.
This is going to be a great experience for all and Lightning head coach Rich Billings is excited.
“It should be a fun time,” Billings said. “Seeing the way baseball is played in a different part of the world is a really neat thing. We are going to get everyone at-bats and have some fun with it.”
Billings wants his players to key in on the amount of respect the Korean National Team has on the baseball field.
“I am excited to see their [Lightning players] reactions to the respect that the Koreans will bring to the game,” Billings said. “It’s a cultural thing and the Koreans are definitely taught to play the game the right way.”
Derek Lamensdorf (Menlo College) is on the mound tonight for the Lightning. This will be an adjustment for him because the Korean team brings a different game of baseball to the table.
“Derek will need to be around the plate tonight,” Billings said. “The Korean team will be very discipline up there. This is a chance for Derek to relax and just go out there and pitch.”
