Leesburg, Florida — The Leesburg Lightning play their final two home games of the regular season tonight and tomorrow against the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs. First pitch is at 7:00pm.
Four games in three days separates Leesburg from the end of the 2015 season. Lightning head coach Rich Billings knows how important it is to win these games.
“Considering the circumstances, the games are very important but in the big picture, they aren’t any bigger than the other games we have played throughout the season,” Billings said. “We need to play well these last few home games.”
Plating runners in scoring position continues to be a key in the success and failure of this team.
“It comes down to them having quality at-bats,” Billings said. “We are down to only so many position players, there are only so many changes we can make in the lineup.”
The bullpen continues to have success and it only gets better as Anthony Paesano (Georgia Southern) rejoins the squad after a few weeks off due to a summer class. Paesano has been dominant coming in relief — allowing two runs on three hits in 8 2/3 innings pitched. He has walked three and struck out 10 batters.
“We are looking forward to having him back,” Billings said. “To have a side-armed lefty out of the pen is really big.”
Blake Sanderson (Florida Atlantic) is on the mound tonight for Leesburg. He is one of the three in the three-man rotation that Billings has decided to go with.
“Call, Darren, and Blake have all been excellent on the mound as starters,” Billings said. “They always seem to give us a quality start.”
